While this is exactly the correct thing for Facebook to do for itself, this promotes the so called splinternet and make Facebook another step closer to being a walled garden.
The question: is that such a bad thing? First I’ll say, I’m no cheerleader for Facebook. I think Facebook can be training wheels for the internet, just as AOL was. I believe there will always be some cool new thing somewhere on the internet, not yet on Facebook that will lead people away. Perhaps not permanently but enough that Facebook will not overtake the rest of the internet. And if my 90 year old aunt gets everything she needs from Facebook and it is easy to use for her – great. Better that than she not be on the internet at all.
